Luscious banana cream pie
Inherited from my Grandmother, this banana cream pie recipe is absolutely wonderful! It layers a rich, vanilla sauce over fresh bananas and, of course, is all topped with a luscious meringue. It’s a light dessert, that’s at the same time very satisfying. And, since bananas are good for you, it’s healthy!!
Banana Cream Pie Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 baked 9-inch pie crust
- ¾ cups sugar
- 1/3 cup flour
- ¼ tsp. salt
- 2 cups milk
- 3 slightly beaten egg yolks (save the whites at room temperature for the meringue)
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tsp. vanilla
Directions for the pie:
In a saucepan, combine sugar, flour, salt, and milk. Cook and stir over medium heat until mixture boils. Cook 2 minutes longer and remove from heat. Stir a small amount of the hot mixture into the yolks, then add the yolks to the milk mixture (you do this to warm the yolks a bit before adding to the hot mixture -- otherwise the yolks will curdle) – stir to incorporate and cook 2 more minutes. Remove from heat. Add butter and vanilla. Cool to room temperature.
Slice 3 bananas over the bottom of the baked pie shell. Spread the cooled milk mixture over the banana slices. Top with meringue (ensure that it is spread completely over the filling and seals to the crust), and bake at 350 degrees for 12 – 15 minutes or until the peaks of the meringue are brown. Cool, then serve.
Meringue Recipe
Ingredients:
- 3 egg whites
- ½ tsp. vanilla
- 1/8 tsp. salt
- ¼ tsp. cream of tartar
- 6 tablespoons sugar
Directions for making meringue:
Beat egg whites with the vanilla, salt, and cream of tartar until soft peaks form. Slowly add the sugar and continue beating until stiff peaks form.

Excellent recipe Sherry! Thanks. I will certainly be trying this one.
That looks great. I hated banana cream pie up until a few years ago. I'm glad I found my taste for it because I want to make this!
This looks so good!
I baked this banana cream pie for my husband a couple of weeks ago, and I agree, it is the best ever! I am originally from the American South, so this kind of thing was a staple dessert in our family, but my husband had never had one before (he is English) and he nearly fell off his chair, such was his pleasure. It's his new favourite dessert.
Absolutely yummy! I made this pie over the weekend, and according to my husband, (he loved every bite), this recipe is a keeper. I used a basic Crisco recipe for the pie crust, which I hope would have made your Grandmother proud, Thanks for sharing the recipe, and more importantly, the memory of her, with your readers.
