Baltimore Restaurant Week starts Friday; Kick-Off Event @ Inner Harbor Wednesday

Visit Baltimore, Harborplace & The Gallery, and Downtown Partnership of Baltimore invite the public to taste-test some of the best food in town during the First Course - Appetizer Challenge on August 3, in which restaurants will duke it out to determine who creates the tastiest appetizers.

Baltimore’s annual Summer Restaurant Week kicks off its sixth run on Friday, August 5, 2011, and continues through Sunday, August 14, 2011. But diners don’t have to wait that long to sample delicious food from Baltimore’s best restaurants as they will serve up the first course of dining specials on Wednesday, August 3, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Harborplace Amphitheater.

Restaurants will be judged in three categories: “Judges’ Choice,” in which a panel of celebrity judges –  including Reagan Warfield from MIX 106.5, as well as other notable Baltimore personalities, will critique the appetizer on taste, presentation, creativity and overall appeal; “People’s Choice,” in which the audience will be asked to sample and vote on their favorite dish; and “Best Use of Locally Sourced Ingredients,” in which the judging panel will select a winner based on the use of seasonal ingredients.

Baltimore’s Summer Restaurant Week provides guests with the opportunity to sample delectable food and fresh tastes throughout various restaurants in the Baltimore area. During the 10-day event, the restaurants involved will provide guests with the opportunity to try new tastes or return to old favorites in some of Baltimore’s many neighborhoods including Little Italy, Mount Vernon, Fell’s Point, Federal Hill, Harbor East and the Inner Harbor. All participating restaurants are offering three-course prix-fixe (set) dinner menus for $35.11 per person, not including liquor, tax or gratuity. Select restaurants will also offer a three-course lunch menu for $20.11, not including liquor, tax or gratuity.

Restaurants that are taking part are already offering special events for their customers. Examples include $10 gift cards from City Café to be used during future visits and complimentary house wine or house cocktail on the customer’s next visit at the Mt. Washington Tavern.

Baltimore’s Sixth Annual Summer Restaurant Week also extends an opportunity to give back to the community. “The Journey Home” is Baltimore City’s 10-year plan to end homelessness. Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake’s goal is to make homelessness rare and brief in the Baltimore region. For every restaurant that signs up to participate in Summer Restaurant Week, Visit Baltimore and Downtown Partnership of Baltimore will donate $50 to “The Journey Home” organization. Individuals can also text “JOIN” to “20222” and for every text received between August 5 and August 14, the United Way will donate $10 to “The Journey Home.”
