BALTIMORE, MD, October 24, 2013 - Reverend Dr. Arthur Eugene Jones, Pastor Emeritus of Jones Tabernacle Baptist Church and former Executive Director of the Maryland Baptist Aged Home, died in Baltimore, Maryland after complications from a brief hospital stay. He was 88 years old.
"I am profoundly grateful for the life and legacy of Pastor Jones. I am where I am today because God spoke to and through him" says Pastor Guy Robinson, current Pastor at Jones Tabernacle. In his 66 years of pastoring his congregation, Dr. Jones took his ministry beyond the brick and mortar by uplifting the people in the community, in the state and across the nation.
Early in his role as Pastor, Dr. Jones partnered with former Baltimore Mayor and Governor William Donald Schaefer and James Rouse of The Rouse Company to secure funding for a project near and dear to his heart- The Maryland Baptist Aged Home - a nursing facility for lower income families. His relationship with Governor Schaefer and The Rouse Company would span over 3 decades.
An accomplished musician and World War II veteran, Dr. Jones served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the US Army. He penned one of his most popular songs, "In the Tabernacle of The Lord" while at war in Okinawa.
Dr. Jones will lie in state at Jones Tabernacle Baptist Church on Sunday, October 27, 2013 from 3p-5p immediately followed by a musical tribute featuring several world-renowned musicians. The victorious homegoing celebration will be held on Monday, October 28, 2013 at 10:30am. Dr. Jones will receive a military burial and 21 gun salute on Friday, November 1, 2013 (10:45a) at Garrison Forest Cemetery, Owings Mills, Maryland.
Dr. Jones was preceded in death by his previous wife, Clotelle, daughter, Cynthia and son, Jerome, Sr. He leaves behind his wife, Lavern, three daughters, eight grandchildren and a host of additional family, members and friends.
