At least three people are dead after a gunman opened fire at the Mall in Columbia in Columbia, MD on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2013.
Howard County Police tweeted about the shooting shortly before noon on Saturday stating that there was a "shooting incident at the Columbia mall. No additional details yet." Minutes later, they confirmed that three people were killed inside the mall. One of the people who died was the shooter according to MSNBC.
NBC Washington reported at 12:25 p.m. that according to police, the suspect was "found dead near a gun an ammunition" inside the mall that is near Baltimore.
At the time of the incident, emergency personnel and police arrived on the scene. Authorities sent out a tweet that urged people to stay away from the area.
NBC Washington spoke to an man whose daughter was in the mall. She told her father that she was taking shelter "with dozens of others" inside a Bank of America that is located in the mall.
The mall is closed and a security spokesman indicated to reporters that the "situation may be over."
Mall employees took to Twitter with photos of workers and customers hiding in closets and stockrooms while the mall was on lockdown.
