Don’t’ you love the fall! Everyone is back from vacation, the kids are in school and the parties begin.
There is so much going on that I will not be able to devote an entire column to each bit of news so here goes, in no particular order. This should keep you ahead of the game on Baltimore Food News for the next couple of days.
Before I forget, L’Shana Tova (Happy New Year) as many of our friends kick off the Jewish New Year this evening. A tradition is to dip sweet not tart apples in honey to represent the belief that all will be granted a sweet year.
Doughie’s is coming; at least that is what the sign says at the corner of Reisterstown Road –Slade-Milford Mill in Pikesville. I am assuming the Barbecue place will be going in the office building at that corner.
Rod Henry of Dangerously Delicious Pie’s told me at The Farmer and The Chef event that he and Duff Goldman are participating in the New York City Wine & Food Festival kicking off tomorrow. If memory serves me, they will be the only desserts at The Grand Tasting. Rod said he and Duff are going to try to make it to the StarChef.com International Congress that kicks off this Sunday in New York. If I see them, I’ll report it. I will be covering the International Chefs Congress.
Meanwhile Baltimore’s own Chef Gjerde will be teaching a seminar at the International Chefs Congress and Blue Hill’s Pastry Chef Bettina Clair will be competing in a StarChefs.com pastry contest judged by the world’s leading pastry chefs the likes of Johnny Iuzzini, Elizabeth Falkner, Pierre Hermé and Franciois Payard.
Food Network star Chef Anne Burrell launches her new cookbook Cook Like a Rock Star on October 4th but note she will be in Annapolis on October 6th and Baltimore October 7th signing copies of her book. More details to come in my Examiner’s National Food column - look for a contest.
Baltimore's second annual Healthy City Days, aimed at educating and encouraging citizens to eat right, exercise often and focus on overall wellness, will take place from September 30th through October 7th. Free screenings, health fairs, and a series of workouts in parks and public spaces highlight the eight day initiative which is supported by the City administration, Baltimore City Health Department, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, University of Maryland Medical Center and many non-profit organizations. Check out the calendar of events.
Sunday, October 2nd - For the kids – the FREE Ultimate Block Party – the arts and sciences of play. Bring your family for a fun day filled with playful activities that show firsthand the importance of play in learning. Play is the work of our children, helping to develop the skills they will need in school, in life and in the workplace of the 21st century. To critical thinking and communications to collaboration and creativity, these skills can be nurtured while playing in the sandbox, painting a picture or simply looking under a rock.
