Baltimore Examiner Verinda Birdsong's week ahead: February 12-18

Baltimore Examiner Verinda Birdsong is preparing several articles and updates - Week of February 12-18, 2012.

  • 2012 MD General Assembly "BILL WATCH": Review legislative bills before the 2012 MD General Assembly that will aid citizens to obtain affordable housing, job re-entry opportunities, medical assistance and voter’s registration. A bill to help victims of domestic violence is before the General Assembly. "Safe Housing" is needed for persons who need assistance in finding emergengy housing for themselves and their children. Citizens of Maryland: you can help by adding your voice and speaking with your local representative in Annapolis to cast your vote in support (or oppose) critical legislation affecting vulnerable citizens.
  • The new quarterly Baltimore city street quarterly street newspaper is now a “non-profit” organization under the auspices of "Fusion" a non-profit organization in the city. Word on the Street is fast-tracking and preparing content to get the paper ready for print and in the streets of Baltimore by March 15, 2012. Updates will be provided on this tremendous effort.
  • My Profile in Care series continues with a 2-part series on Baltimore City’s Helping up Mission. Jesus, Faith and Homelessness – Helping up Missions’ transformation continues to serve Christ and 400 men. It is an incredible story and journey of hope and how the lives of men and the organization are changing “from the inside out”.
  • Baltimore County updates on the point in time survey, a rally and march to speak to Baltimore county executives on March 19, 2012 will be featured.
  • Look for my interview later this month with the Board President of Baltimore County Communities for the Homeless (BCCH), Joseph Sanders, Minister of Missions and Outreach at Morningside Baptist Church (Catonsville, MD, Bishop Dewayne Debnam, Pastor). Hear what he has to say about "the church and social justice".
  • Join us! BCCH meets the 2nd Thursday of every month, from 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm at the Valley Baptist Church in Towson, MD. Students, retirees, faith community representatives are welcomed. If your church is sponsoring an event in your local community to support citizens experiencing homelessness or if you want to help, please contact me at wordlot674@hotmail.com. We need more new faces and committed county citizens to sit at the roundtable to talk about homelessness in the county and meet with legislators. You can make a difference.
  • Quick Update: BCCH’s Education committee is sponsoring a basic needs drive program and we have a list of items so desperately needed for citizens. If your church wants to participate in a drive to help, please contact us. The list will be provided next week.
  • The Christianity column will feature, Tuesday is Faith and Finances: "He's all we need" - a spin-off of a dynamic message given today by Bishop Walter S. Thomas, Sr. (Pastor, New Psalmsit Baptist Church, www.newpsalmist.org). from Matthew 6:33, Holy Bible: "Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you". We don't need more money - we need Jesus Christ in our lives.
