The Baltimore City Council voted unanimously on Friday, December 9, 2011 to make December 21, Homeless Persons Memorial Day in Baltimore. The bill, introduced by Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke (District 14, Baltimore City) has been long awaited due to the increase in homelessness in the City since the last census in 2009 and a need for the City to work more closely with organizations supporting homeless citizens and working to make the experience of homelessness a rare and brief life event.
“The memorial service will begin at 5:30 p.m. on December 21st at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor’s Amphitheater (the corner of Pratt and Light Streets) to recognize more than 70 men and women who died in 2011 and who, in life, lacked a regular place to stay. The service is organized by members of SHARP, a coalition of homeless service providers and advocates working toStop Homelessness and Reduce Poverty.”
