Balmy and brutal highs, nearly a week below zero, and feet of snow top the list of Michigan weather events on this day in history. From the National Weather Service archives here are the events that happened on January 20.

1906 - Temperatures soar into the 60s after a warm front moves through. Grand Rapids and Detroit hit 64° and Lansing rises to 62°, the first of three days of record highs at Lansing.

1985 - A vast stream of arctic air keeps high temperatures from rising much, with highs of at Lansing, at Grand Rapids, at Muskegon, Houghton Lake, Detroit and Flint along with a bitter west wind gusting to 25 mph.

1988 - A storm in the Upper Midwest produced heavy snow and gale force winds. Up to 27.5 inches of snow was reported along the Lake Superior shoreline of Michigan, with 22 inches at Marquette. (The National Weather Summary) (Storm Data)

1994 - At 11am EST, Marquette finally rose above after 167 consecutive hours of below zero temperatures.

1996 - The winter storm wound down. In West Upper Michigan, where the precipitation was mostly snow, 44 inches fell at Silver City and 40 inches fell at Ontonagon. Other snow reports included 26 inches at Houghton, 23 inches at Copper Harbor, 21 inches at Pelkie, 16 inches at Ironwood, 13 inches at L'anse and 11 inches at Watersmeet.

2006 - A snowstorm blew through Southeast Lower Michigan on the 20th and the 21st where the city of Midland received 7.0 inches of snow with 1 foot drifts.
