Mayumi Heene said that the helium balloon used in the balloon boy hoax was created for a hoax to draw media attention according to court documents released Friday, CNN reported.
Mayumi Heene said that they knew Falcon, 6 hid while police searched for him at their home, she told authorities on Saturday, October 17 according to the documents.
Most of the country believed that Falcon had flown away on the balloon, and the Heene family acted as though he did, and when the balloon landed, the family said they thought he may have fallen out of the balloon somewhere along the way.
They created the hoax about two weeks before the incident and "instructed their three children to lie to authorities as well as the media regarding this hoax," CNN reported. They stated they wanted to make the family more marketable for a possible reality TV show.
Other federal agencies are also investigating possible charges, including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The Heenes appeared on the reality TV show Wife Swap, and Richard Heene who is a storm chaser has been an iReporter for CNN. The Heene family said they were approached by TLC about a possible reality TV show "and we passed."
