Travel for love of raptors to the Greater Salt Lake area and observe large concentrations of bald eagles. Meet with Hawk Watch Education Director, Jen Hajj for a day of eagle ecology, sightings and photography. Discuss bald eagle natural history, their amazing recovery from the endangered species list, and what the future holds for our national bird.
Every year, beginning in November, hundreds of bald eagles fly into Utah and stay until the ice starts to melt in March. Latest estimates put the number of visiting eagles in Utah at about 1,000. Utah is among the top 10 winter stops for bald eagles, even sometimes among the top five. The Great Salt Lake is Utah's major corridor for eagles, so come out to see them fly.
Meet at 9:00AM at HWI's Salt Lake Office, at 2240 South 900 East, to arrange carpools to the field site. The field trip is scheduled to end at 12:00PM. Pack snacks and plenty of water. Remember to wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather. Bring your binoculars and a camera to capture these remarkable raptors in action!
