Kannon Burrage had another solid night, managing 19 points but it wasn’t enough as UTSA lost again, falling to Denver 71-57 at the Convocation Center on Thursday night.
Brett Olson was the leader for Denver as he managed 16 in an attack that spread the wealth with a 48.9% success rate from the field with seven players hitting eight or more points.
The Pioneers led from the tip-off and pushed their lead out to as high as 28 as they completed the double over UTSA.
Eight first-half three-pointers gave Denver a commanding 39-19 lead at the break after a nice effort from Marcus Byrd bounced off the rim and through the net as the buzzer sounded.
The Denver lead grew further, out to 59-31 when Olson hit his fourth three of the night with 11:49 left to play.
UTSA were able to get the deficit down to 20 at 62-42 thanks to an 8-0 run part way through the second but they still never really looked in it.
UTSA were helped out by five missed field-goals in that 8-0 run before Jalen Love managed Denver’s 12th trey from the night to hit the score to 67-44 with 4:26 to play after going 6:22 without a field-goal.
An 11-0 run put some respectability in the score for UTSA late on allowing them to cut the deficit to 18 in the last 2:30. Burrage ended it with a three-pointer and then a rare four point play with 20 seconds to play for the final score.
Despite UTSA no doubt being disappointed about the loss they will be pleased that they scored so much against the best defense in the league, the most they’ve conceded since the season opener last year.
