Stott, BASI, Physical Mind all of these names are Pilates businesses and methods founded and run by former dancers and/or Pilates practitioners. Enter Balanced Body, founded and run by former furniture designer Ken Endelman; Balanced Body’s story began with the tenacious request of one of Ken’s furniture clients to “make her a reformer.” Not knowing what the client was talking about, Ken dismissed the request until his client set a firm date to meet with Ken, show him an actual reformer, provide the specs for her machine, and the rest as they say is history.
Fast forward to the present day and Balanced Body is one of the top rated Pilates businesses in the world. When asked “what is the secret to the success of the Balanced Body method, Ken noted that Balanced Body is not a method per se, but their success is a result of their commitment to the highest quality equipment and the most diverse Pilates education.
Providing more information about the Balanced Body educational program is Nora St. John, Balanced Body’s Education Program Director. According to Ms. St. John, Balanced Body educational programs are “designed to include the traditional Pilates repertoire along with modifications, variations and additions to bring educational programming in line with current research in exercise science.” Program design includes influences of Pilates elders like Romana Kryzanowska, Eve Gentry, Kathy Grant, Ron Fletcher, and Carola Trier whose expertise helps Balanced Body to “produce students with a strong understanding of the Pilates principles and exercises, who are good problem solvers and equipped to adapt to a wide range of teaching situations from private training, to group classes to rehabilitation environments.”
To expand its reputation for excellence in Pilates education and its quality product line, Balanced Body has recently acquired a new product called the CoreFitnessRoller. The CFR as it is affectionately known at Balanced Body, is a uniquely designed foam roller that can be used in different aspects of Pilates based training. From a business perspective Mr. Endelman looks at the purchase of this product as a good way to expand the equipment line of Balanced Body with something new that complements the company’s goal for safe, effective, practical exercise. Additionally the overwhelmingly positive response from Balanced Body’s instructors and educational staff helped to spur the acquisition along. From an educational perspective, Ms. St. John will be looking to “create curriculum built on the Balanced Body movement principles and adapted to the unique properties of the CoreFitnessRoller.”
Excellence in education is a large component of Balanced Body’s success and Mr. Endelman works to share his success with each and every person he encounters by creating many educational opportunities. Pilates on Tour, Balanced Body on the Road and www.pilates.com are the vehicles Mr. Endelman uses to bring education to the Pilates community and the general public. Pilates on Tour is a conference for Pilates instructors and enthusiasts from every branch of the Pilates community. Balanced Body on the Road and www.pilates.com are in person and on-line educational forums designed to bring the Pilates community together to promote the Pilates brand in one collective voice.
From the humble beginnings as a furniture designer to the head of a top rated Pilates company, Ken Endelman brings together the Pilates community and the community at large by promoting Pilates through educational events throughout the country and the world.
