Cathy Fenwick, author, educator, therapist and well-known international speaker holds a Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology, a professional teaching certificate, and has more than thirty years of experience in counseling, teaching, and workshop development and presentation. She gives workshops across Canada and speaks at national and international conferences, including a keynote on Women’s Health Issues at the European Institute of Oncology in Milan, Italy and Care of the Care-giver at an International Palliative Care Conference in Dublin, Ireland.
As a cancer survivor, Cathy believes that combining the best that medicine has to offer with the wisdom of holistic healing, we have a better quality of life and a better chance of getting healthy and staying healthy. Our bodies have a natural healing element built in but it has to be allowed to function. Do not stifle it. A cut will be covered by a scab, sprains and swellings reduce with time given proper rest. Enhance the healing process with positive thoughts and visualization. Picture yourself healthy and cured. Give it a healthy environment. Do not resist or fight the healing process.
As a Reiki Master, I find creating calmness, both inner and outer, is beneficial to a positive outcome. The ideal room would have flowers, crystals or stones, candles/incense, soft music playing, a comfortable sitting or lying spot. All these create a balance providing all aspects of the healing system to do its thing.
Balance is key in our everyday lives. We are all familiar with the old adage about “all work and no play makes……” We all have areas of interest that we enjoy spending time doing and that we are more proficient in. If we constantly spend 18 hours a day at our work, much else will suffer. While paychecks will look good, family and friend relationships, health, spirituality will eventually suffer if this becomes a usual practice rather than the exception.
A balance of physical activity, mental, emotional and spiritual activity produces a well-rounded individual and a prime environment for healing and good health. An imbalance occurs all too often among those experiencing depression for example. The individuals will often get wrapped up in their woes making that proverbial mountain out of a molehill. Physical activity will act as a diversion from this negative concentration giving the mind, emotions and even the physical body a chance to participate and aid in healing. Please, do not misunderstand; there are some illnesses and injuries that require complete rest, physical rest. The intellect and spirit can still step in and aid in the healing process and prevent additional damage.
The elements in life that require the most balancing can be divided into two categories: internal and external. Oftentimes, people focus on one more than the other.
For example, you may find that you focus on external things–like work, relationships, and activities, and that you pay very little attention to what is going on inside your heart and mind. Or, you may find that you spend so much time being self-reflective that you sometimes miss out on the experience of living.
Take some time to really look at your life, your state of mind, and how you’re feeling. Be honest with yourself and notice the areas of your life that you’re neglecting.
Notice if you’re leaning more toward an internal or external focus, or if there are areas within each category that you would like to be more balanced. Then look closer in detail. What can you do to bring the balance back?
Then, perhaps the hardest part, put yourself in motion to bring balance into your life. It will not happen by itself and may feel forced at first until it all comes closer to being in balance. Be kind to yourself. Balance won’t feel good if you’re cruel to yourself in creating it.
Just like accomplishing any goal in life, it takes time and effort to overcome your habitual patterns and create new ones but you can create new habits to enjoy a more balanced life going forward.
