Baking soda benefits: Natural remedies and in-home uses

In the capitalistic, advertising-driven world we live in, it’s tough to escape the feeling that we need every new product we see on TV in order to remedy what ails us.

Clarifying shampoo, whitening toothpaste, better laundry detergent, carpet cleaner, or air freshener; the list goes on and on.

But a little-known fact that the producers of said products don’t want us to know is that – gasp! – we don’t really need them.

Baking soda is an inexpensive miracle product that can enhance or replace existing products that we spend billions of dollars on each year. Products that are full of harmful chemicals and unnecessary substances.

Here are some uses for the readily available, affordable leavening agent that so many of us overlook:

Shampoo: Add a teaspoon to your shampoo once a week to lift product residue. No need to spend eight bucks on an additional brand-name shampoo.

Toothpaste: Want whiter teeth and a cleaner mouth? Mix baking soda with peroxide as a toothpaste substitute.

Exfoliate: Rather than buying another skincare product, scrub your face with a bit of baking soda. It’s gentle and costs significantly less than most skincare lines.

Prevent heartburn: One half teaspoon mixed in water makes for a heartburn and sour stomach reliever that doesn’t cost as much as those chalky tablets. But read the label before using – you shouldn’t ingest it if your stomach is super full.

Air freshener: Aside from putting an open box of baking soda in your refrigerator to absorb odors, simmer baking soda with water on the stove to neutralize smells all over the house. Add some vanilla extract and cinnamon for a nice scent.

Household cleaner: Scrub your tub, toilet, sink, countertops, stove, cabinets – you name it – with baking soda. Mix with vinegar for a natural yet effective disinfectant. The acidity from the vinegar will remove the organic matter from your surfaces and the baking soda will scrub it clean. Get some recipes for homemade cleaning products here.

Prevent cancer: Baking soda is super alkaline, while cancer cells develop from the acidity in our bodies, often due to the intake of meat and dairy products. Keep your pH levels right with a daily dose of the stuff.

In addition, baking soda can be used to sprinkle on carpets, garbage cans, shoes, mattresses, car seats and furniture to absorb odor. It can be used as an underarm deodorant, bath soak, breath freshener, or laundry detergent and dish soap additive. The possibilities truly are endless!
