Tonight's episode of “Bakery Boss” found Buddy Valastro at “Kristi G’s Cupcakes & More” in Lewisville, Texas to help a failing bakery. Buddy’s motto is “To save the family bakery; you need the right boss.”
Buddy went to visit Kristi and her husband Kenny, who run this family business, but Kristi would rather do things in the bakery herself rather than tell her staff, including her daughter Dallas to stop texting and help out.
With about $120,000 in debt, Kristi called on Buddy to help this sinking ship, before it goes down for good. Buddy looked around the cupcake shop, located in a busy mall, but he was not impressed with the sign and appearance of the place. She told Buddy how she loved to bake and left the corporate world at the insistence of Kenny to have her own shop. Right now, they are losing about $2,500 a month, and they do not want to close because Kristi believes in herself. Buddy got to taste a few cupcakes and did not agree with the rest of the family; they were not rated a ten, and neither were any others. When Buddy read the menu that was listed on the wall, nothing listed was available. Buddy discovered that Kristi’s lack of experience was part of the problem.
When the shop closed, Buddy took Kristi aside to speak with her privately. She felt defeated because she did not want to let anyone down. Buddy promised her that he would not let her bakery fail. Kristi planned to move to the food court in the mall to have a better location. When they went to check it out, Buddy told them that to make it the way they wanted it, would cost about $500,000. So he told Kenny’s mom, who is nicknamed Booger to walk through the mall and ask people where she could get a cupcake, as Buddy, Kristi and Kenny watched via cameras, as people walked past their place. Nobody knew where the cupcake shop was, but a candy shop was one they all knew the exact location.
Buddy then took them all to a park where they met former Army drill sergeant, Jay Johnson, who was ready to give Kristi a lesson. He runs Boot Camp Fitness, and Buddy sent him to give Kristi a backbone. Kristi learned how to be a leader and told her employees what she expected of them.
When Buddy met with his designer, Kenny, who mulled it over with Buddy how to change it around and make the shop more recognizable. Buddy wanted to bring the showcases closer to the door and have the smell of the cupcakes entice people to come in. The next day, the family was together and blindfolded, so Buddy had them remove them and when they saw the change, it was a total shock. Kristi was brought to tears, now the name is prominently displayed and there are two giant cupcakes outside the shop just luring people to it. Neon signs in opposite directions, will stand out from every angle. With a refrigerated pastry case the forefront of the shop, there will be no doubt that cupcakes are sold there. In the back of the shop, out of sight, was the new freezer. She can now bake cupcakes and freeze them, as Buddy showed her and then ice them when needed. As the family was brought to tears, Buddy had a tear in his eyes too.
Buddy gave them some lessons on baking more delicious items. As they were working, Kristi delegated tasks to her employees making the operation run smoothly. Buddy had a surprise for Booger, a mascot outfit for her to wear making her look like a walking cupcake. She walked the mall and invited them to the grand re-opening.
The line outside the shop looked like Buddy’s shops, that always have long lines outside. After three months, Kristi and crew report that sales have more than doubled and the future looks so much brighter and sweeter.
