Although an official public announcement has yet to be made, we've learned that a local Bakersfield business has won a prestigious environmental award from the California Air Resources Board (ARB).
Greenshops, self-described as a "full-service sustainability company that provides green products for everyday living, as well as green services and education through Green Living Consulting (greenlivingconsulting.com)," will be presented the CoolCalifornia Climate Leader Award at ARB's Sacramento headquarters on May 3.
Given only to businesses that meet rigid eligibility criteria, the award is a tribute to the hard work and effort put into the business by co-founders Sasha Windes and Jennifer Jordan, and Adrienne Spahr who joined the company in 2009. The award is given to companies that are proactive in reducing their climate impacts, such as changing lighting, having recycling programs, purchase of environmentally preferable products and increased weatherization.
Greenshops sells skin care products, clothing, bedding, and lots of other eco-friendly products from eco-friendly manufacturers. However, the company doesn't stop there as it tries to operate in a green manner every day. The firm is always looking for ways to reduce waste, conserve energy, and minimize the amount of resources used.
According to Windes, "We are extremely excited to receive this award. Recently State Farm and Frito Lay won the Wrap Award from Cal Recycle, the Greater Bakersfield Green Expo received state attention for the student recycling projects, Bakersfield's Great American Clean Up was one of the largest in the nation, and now Greenshops gets the Cool California Award."
She also believes that receiving this award will have a major benefit to Bakersfield and the Kern County Area. "People are now starting to notice all the positive things happening here in Kern County," she added. "I think that receiving all this attention to Kern County businesses and citizens helps give a boost of pride to our community. We have been hit with a lot of worst lists and I think it gives an unrealistic image of Bakersfield. I have lived in Bakersfield my whole life, and the people here are amazing. We need to start showing off some of the great things that are happening here in this community. When we go to the awards ceremony in Sacramento, we will stand in pride that we are from Bakersfield because it has been with all the support from everyone that has allowed us to do what we do."
