There are so many different types of pies that you are sure to find one that you like and can choose to celebrate with.

January 23 is National Pie Day.

A pie is a baked dish made up of a pastry dough or crust filled with sweet or savory ingredients.

Pies can be a variety of sizes, ranging from bite-size to ones designed for multiple services.

Pies have been around for a long time. The Greeks and Romans made some of the first pies in history. People filled pastry shells with different kinds of ingredients, flavored them with a variety of spices, and served them as part of their meal.

By the 1940s, pie had become the iconic American dessert.
The Pilgrims brought pie recipes to the New World when they came to the U.S. in the1600s. They arrived with English pie recipes for beef, lamb, duck, or pigeon. It wasn’t until the late 1800s that the first sweet pies emerged. These included the ingredients we’re accustomed to today.

The filling for sweet pies may include apple, berry, pumpkin, sweet potato, or coconut. There are plenty of quick and easy recipes to make these pies.

It is worth noting that when people think about pies, they think only about sweet desserts. However, pies can include meats, seafood or vegetables such as chicken pot pies.

Enjoy National Pie Day with a slice of pie of your choice.
