On Monday, Judge Lena Levario raised Robert Prichard's bail from $500 to $50,000 for allegedly killing his dog as reported by the DallasNews.com. Prichard, 59, of Mesquite, Texas was charged with felony animal cruelty.
The horrific case of animal cruelty was reported on Aug. 30, by a neighbor who heard Prichard yell to his dog, " you are a dead dog." Prichard was angry because his pit bull had chewed on the cushions of the patio furniture. A witness stated they had seen Prichard pull the dog out of the pool, beat the dog several times over the head with a shovel and then throw the animal towards the fence.
When officers from the Mesquite Police Department arrived, Prichard was covered in blood. After several different versions of his story, Prichard allegedly confessed to killing his dog, but said it was in self defense.
Neighbors and humane advocates say that Prichard is a danger to animals, to society, and to himself.
NBCFw.com states that prosecutors have a surveillance tape of the attack, and will wait until the trial to present the evidence.
If Prichard is released from jail, he will not be allowed to own or possess any animals until the case is over. Another puppy was found at Prichard's home; the pet is being cared for by Animal Control.
