Bad-mouthing Tiger Woods for his infidelity scandal makes resort lose PGA Tour

Gone are the days when one could talk about Tiger Woods’ infidelity scandal with impunity.

On Monday, Feb. 11, PGA Tour chief executive officer Brian Thorburn made the following official announcement:

The PGA has today formally advised Palmer Coolum Resort of its decision that the Championship will not be returning to Coolum in 2013.

The Result of Bad-Mouthing Tiger Woods

Although there were other factors also involved, TheAustralian.com contends that the PGA’s decision to sever its 11-year relationship with the Palmer Coolum resort was heavily influenced by statements made by the resort’s billionaire owner, Clive Palmer.

In an interview a few months ago with The Australian, Palmer made comments about Tiger Woods, in which he obliquely referred to Tiger’s widely publicized infidelity scandal in 2009, and indicated that he had no interest in having Tiger Woods play at his resort. According to USA Today, this is what Clive Palmer had to say:

Tiger Woods isn't the No 1 golfer in the world any more. We don't want to look backwards, we want to look forwards. So why would you get Tiger Woods here? I would prefer to have Peter Senior than Tiger Woods.

"I am sure Peter Senior could beat Tiger Woods on a good day. I am sure he could.

"Tiger Woods has improved a lot but he's an emotional wreck and he's not a good example for kids, anyway."

Palmer’s comments attracted international attention at the time. No doubt, Palmer is regretting those remarks, especially since Tiger Woods is now ranked at #2.

The PGA Distances Itself from Palmer’s Remarks

Realizing the possibility that Palmer’s comments could negatively impact attempts to attract Tiger Woods to future Australian PGA events, PGA chief executive Thorburn took steps to distance the PGA from Palmer’s remarks. On the same day that Thorburn officially announced that the PGA would be played elsewhere, instead of at Coolum this year, it emerged that he’d e-mailed Tiger Woods’ to clarify the PGA’s position on Clive Palmer’s remarks.

Said Thorburn:

The Feb. 12 ViewNews.com reports that the Palmer Coolum resort is mourning the loss of its long time position as host for the PGA Tour It represents a devastating blow to Coolum businesses, which had come to rely on the influx of visitors generated by the prestigious golf tournament. Other reasons cited for the PGA’s split with the Palmer Coolum resort include the presence of a 26-foot replica of a dinosaur adjacent to the ninth green, signage along the course for Clive Palmer’s other companies, and a lack of flexibility for tournament dates.

However, The Australian maintains that the primary reason is Clive Palmer’s disparaging comments about Tiger Woods.

If what The Australian says is true, the message is clear:

Be careful what you say about Tiger Woods.
