The exhibition kicks off on August 1st with an Opening Reception at the Warehouse Gallery & Studio picturing Natural Hairstyles in a light to challenge one's perception on what is often labeled "Bad Hair". The striking headshots are at the center of a series of events to uproot the stereotypical follicles of Black Hair in our society.

Besides a Free Photo Shoot, workshops and a Natural Hair Show, the audience will also get a chance to be at the first public screening of the Going-Natural Video Diaries, a documentary that chronicles the rapidly growing natural hair movement in real time.

Organizer of these events is Mireille Liong-A-Kong, a Social Entrepreneur with a Master Degree in Information Technology. After personally suffering from relaxer induced alopecia, a hair loss condition that teases 73% of Black women in America, Liong published "Going Natural, How to Fall in Love with Nappy Hair" and created going-natural.com with the goal to redeem the beauty of natural hair and help tackle the hair loss issues. A decade later it is time to look back and celebrate not only the going-natural.com community but also the natural hair movement at large, a movement going-natural.com helped sparked pre-facebook, twitter and youtube era.

While the Free Photo Shoot is the founder's way of giving back to the loyal going-natural.com community that now exceeds 35.000+ members, the goal of documentary is to spark national attention on the health issues related to the perception of natural hair and the stereotyping of appropriate natural hairstyles.

Gillian Scott representative of the New York Association of Black Psychologists will be among the distinguished guests of professional panelists who will discuss the issues after the screening, as will Robert E. Cornegy, Council Member of the 36 district who wears his hair in Dreadlocks.

The festivities will conclude on August 23rd with a hair raising Natural Hair Show featuring the nation's top hair salons that sprout the natural hair movement.
All events will be held at the Warehouse Gallery & Studio in Redhook.
