In all honesty, everyone has a driving habit they could probably do without. And not just because it's more polite to other drivers, but because it could help your overall safety record. Now, I know you probably have a long list of behaviors from other drivers who irritate or enrage you. But could you perhaps be at fault to some of these bad driving habits?
- Chatting on your cellphone while driving. Yes, it's inconvenient sometimes to pull off the road in order to talk on the phone, but it's a fact that cellphone usage while in the car increases distraction and the possibility of an accident. At least consider using a bluetooth earpiece or other device to help you keep both hands on the wheel. And the fact that "everyone's doing it" doesn't make it any safer. What is this, middle school?
- Unnecessary honking, yelling, or other acts of road rage. It feels good to vent your frustration when someone cuts you off in traffic or flips you the bird, but you're only increasing your blood pressure and not solving anything by pounding the dashboard, punching the horn or tailgating them until the next turnoff. Show you're better than them by not letting their attitude infect you.
- Driving while drowsy. It's easy to do, but getting behind the wheel without having enough sleep is dangerous to you, your passengers, and other drivers.
