San Antonio, TX - Fireworks flew during today's press conference for this weekend's "Welcome to the Future" HBO twin bill headed by Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. and Nonito Donaire, Jr.
For the most part, Donaire and Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. have kept it clean and cordial and have exchanged complimentary and respectful words toward each other leading up to their WBO super bantamweight title showdown.
But last Tuesday, tempers flared when both fighters including their significant others locked horns in a back-and-forth "Twitter war".
Vazquez's wife (@lyameraliz) called out Donaire (@filipinoflash) on Twitter regarding their open workouts yesterday at the Jesse Leija Gym in San Antonio and wrote:
"@lyameraliz: @filipinoflash your scared! See you there!! #teamvazquezjr"
Both sides have traded shots and have been at odds since, and boiled over during today's press conference.
A fiery Vazquez stepped up and pointed his finger at Donaire's face on stage. Initially calm and collected, Donaire started taking offense after some choice words coming from Vazquez as both fighters started jawing at each other and had to be separated by Top Rank officials.
Good news is, at the end of the day, cooler heads prevailed as Vaquez's father Wilfredo, Sr. apologized to the Donaire camp for the incident.
I guess it's safe to say, there won't be a repeat of Donaire-Narvaez on Saturday with the way these two were going at it.
Get your popcorns ready.
