What if you could begin the game with not one but two starting hands? Backup Plan from Wizards of the Coast's upcoming expert Magic: The Gathering set Conspiracy allows you to do just that. Revealed today May 20, 2014 in an article by Dave Humpherys on DailyMTG.com, Backup Plan can give you a decisive edge.
(Start the game with this conspiracy face up in the command zone.)
Draw an additional hand of seven cards as the game begins. Before taking mulligans, shuffle all but one of your hands into your library.
"In the market for an alternative, friend?"
If you enjoy playing combo decks Backup Plan will increase the odds of acquiring one or more of the key pieces to your win condition. Even if you're not playing a combo deck, having the option between two different hands helps mitigate any mulligans. Although most playgroups allow one free mulligan before you Paris down to six, having that extra starting hand will significantly reduce the chances that you'll need to. There's nothing worse than getting mana-screwed, and with Backup Plan that'll happen much less often.
We love Backup Plan because it changes one of the fundamental rules of the game. It begs the question: Will there be any conspiracy cards which change your starting hand size? What other potential rules can be broken? Is there anything Wizards R&D won't touch or is everything fair game?
How will you use Backup Plan?
