NYX Cosmetics, a makeup line created over thirteen years ago by Toni Ko, a young entrepreneur who wanted to offer quality products at affordable prices, was the makeup of choice for Nicholas K and Hernan Lander for their Fall 2013 presentations at the tents for MBFW. With a line of eye shadows that feature over 160 colors, from neutrals to bold and bright daring shades, NYX was the go to line for Tina Turnbow, head makeup artist backstage for both collections. Drama for the eyes was a key factor in the looks for the designers, and the variety of colors and textures in the NYX collection was critical to the strong looks that Turnbow and her team created on the models. The theme for Nicholas K was Arctic exploration and for Lander it was the earth tone palette of colors from terra cotta browns to cool grays.
For Nicholas K, Turnbow used NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Black Bean, Nude Matte Shadow in 'Confession' and 'Stripped', Kohl Kajal Black Liner and Eyebrow Pencil in Brown. Lips were whited out with NYX Wonder Pencil. On cheeks, she used Highlight and Contour Powder and Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk. For the face she applied HD Studio Photogenic Foundation, which she finished with Makeup Setting Spray in Matte Finish. The Nicholas K Fall 2013 line was rife with grays, dark and light neutrals, hoods, furs and goggles, reminiscent of desert aviator meets Arctic explorer. The powerful eyes with glacial skin tones that Turnbow created with the NYX palette ideally suited the steely look of the line.
Hernan Lander wanted to convey the equality of skin tone, and his presentation featured body conscious dresses with sexy cutouts, luminous suits in steel, white and black, and a tan leather dress with a crystal beaded hem. For Lander's models, Turnbow created a shimmery eye with Cream Shadow in Gunmetal, Roll on Eye Shimmer in Chestnut, Wonder Pencil, Jumbo Eye Pencil in Slate and Dark Brown, Collection Noir Kohl Kajal Black Liner and Collection Chocolate Kohl Kajal Brown Liner. Lips were nuded out with Wonder Pencil and cheeks were left clean. For face, Turnbow applied Stay Matte But Not Flat Powder Foundation and Studio Finishing Powder.
For both shows, Turnbow headed a crew of ten makeup artists, who checked in with her after finishing their work on each model. The Hernan Lander presentation was held on Monday, and Turnbow had just flown back from the West Coast after doing the makeup for Carly Rae Jepson's Grammy appearance. A celebrity makeup artist who got her start as assistant to makeup legend, Pat McGrath during the era of Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista and Kate Moss, Turnbow is in demand with Hollywood's A list and the music industry elite. A green living resident of NYC, Turnbow maintains her fit form hauling heavy cases of makeup to shoots and riding her bicycle. Turnbow studied painting and textile design and views the clean face as her canvas. The huge spectrum of the NYX collection's colors and tones gave the brand's celebrity makeup artist everything she needed to create the dramatic looks for Fall 2013.
