The California designer’s new collection evokes relaxed beach getaways on the golden coast and beauty looks to match.
NEW YORK CITY — West Coast represent! California took New York Fashion Week by storm last week as several fashion houses debuted Spring 2014 lines inspired by the Golden State. At designer Trina Turk’s Box presentation at Lincoln Center on September 8, attendees were whisked away on a drive up the Pacific Coast Highway.
Turk’s new collection for women includes plenty of mid-drift-baring cropped tops (an indication that this comeback trend won’t be going away any time soon), dress shorts, flowing caftans and bottoms, and of course, swimwear, that boast bright colors, playful patterns and bohemian fits—everything a girl needs for a sunny beachside escape. Mr. Turk, the designer’s men’s line, also made an appearance at the show, with bold-print shorts and blazers (including some fun floral numbers) and breezy high-water trousers.
To mirror the carefree SoCal vibe of the collection, key hairstylist Martin-Christopher Harper, for Cutler/Redken Salon, created a look for the models that showcase healthy, soft, beachy waves. To achieve this “bourgeoisie boho” look, as Harper calls it, he first brushed the model’s hair into a middle part and applied Redken Full Frame 07 Volumizing Mousse from the roots to the ends, blow-drying the product into the locks. A 1 ¼-inch curling iron was used to produce the waves, and Cutler Volumizing Spray was added between the layers to create movement and volume. Harper then brushed out the hair lightly with his fingers and finished off the look with a light mist of Redken Fashion Work 12 Versatile Working Spray.
“The Trina Turk woman takes care of herself, she eats well, her hair is managed, and she’s really polished,” Harper says. “That’s what we’re trying to convey.”
On the makeup front, key makeup artist Sarah Lucero, for Stila, went for a warm, sun-kissed look for a girl on the go. “She’s a really cool surfer chick taking a ride in her convertible,” says Lucero’s Stila Pro team colleague, makeup artist Jason Araujo. “She’s got a little bit of sun, she’s got the top down, and her makeup is coming out of her glove compartment.”
To that end, the team opted for just a few multi-tasking performance products in monochromatic, rosy tones. For the face, the artists started with Stila Stay All Day HD BB cream to create a smooth, luminescent base. Stila’s blush-and-lipstick-in-one Convertible Color in Gerbera was then applied to give the cheeks a healthy glow. The Gerbera was also mixed with Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Bellissima to give the lips a peachy pout. The eyelids were topped with Bellissima again, and the lashes were finished off with Stila Stay All Day waterproof mascara—a necessity for a day at the beach. “This can translate into an everyday look for everyone,” Araujo says. “It’s sporty and sexy.”
Fun at Your Fingertips
“Sporty” can also be used to describe the nails, says key nail artist Casey Herman, for Julep. For the fingernails, Herman chose the ultimate color for rest and relaxation: a white. The crisp color, called Eileen, is part of the Fall 2012 collaboration between Julep and Turk. As for the toes, Herman used what she describes as a neon orange sherbet color with a bold red stripe. “It’s all these fun colors, and it just makes you happy,” Herman says.
