Backlund named NHL third star of the week

According to Charlie Simmer of Rogers Sportsnet on Tuesday, Calgary Flames center Mikael Backlund was the National Hockey League's third star of the week from January 27-February 2.

In three games for the Flames this week, Mikael Backlund notched four goals and two assists for six points. In that time, the Flames defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 5-4 in overtime, the San Jose Sharks 4-1 and the Minnesota Wild 4-3 in overtime. In Calgary's win over Minnesota Saturday, Backlund scored the overtime winner.

On the season, Backlund has 13 goals and 14 assists for 27 points. He also leads the team with three shorthanded goals and three game winning goals.

A pair of American Olympians earned first and second of the week honours. Zach Parise of the Minnesota Wild was the first star of the week and Phil Kessel of the Toronto Maple Leafs was the second star. Both Parise and Kessel will play for the United States at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games.
