Back to the ‘50s rolls into town this weekend, the 41st time the show has been hosted inside the festive atmosphere of the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.
One of the largest car show events in the Midwest, Back to the ‘50s keeps breaking both attendance records for cars and spectators year after year.
Though it officially begins Friday, many can’t wait to get the party started. Thursday nights there are several pre-parties scattered all around the Twin Cities. The inclement weather had an impact, with many spots being rained out. We find the best kickoff spot is The Hampton Inn in Shoreview, just north of the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. An official pre-registration center, the Hampton Inn is usually a great way to sneak an early look at the classic cars and custom rides that will be cruising to the fairgrounds. The rain forced many inside and had the cars leaving early, and the crowd followed suit.
Friday was rainy throughout the early part of the day, but by mid-afternoon it turned sunny and hot. There were some mud-soaked grass areas and plenty of puddles, but the cars still showed up. An even better sign at the show was the fact that people were driving their cars. There were some trailers, but most were driven to the fairgrounds despite the rain. We love seeing classic cars getting after it, no matter the conditions. After all, what fun is owning a car if you don’t drive it?
We’re still betting, even with the rain-outs, that the classic cars and spectators will show up. It's too much fun not to.
