Back to School wisdom from Mark Twain

Back to school season means many students will soon be reading Mark Twain's classics such as Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.

Twain's famous characters attended school (when they didn't play hooky) in a much simpler time for education. It is fun to visit old schoolhouses and see what life would of been like in Tom and Huck's period (Pre-Civil War US).

Mark Twain had plenty to say about school and education. Here are a few of my favorite qutoes from Twain:

  • Education consists mainly of what we have unlearned.
  • Everything has its limit - iron ore cannot be educated into gold.
  • I never let schooling interfere with my education.
  • In the first place, God made idiots. That was for practice. Then he made school boards

If you haven't read Tom Sawyer or Huckaberry Finn since you were in school, pick up a copy and give them a read, you will get a lot more out of them than you probably did the first time.
