Back to school always includes some last minute shopping. For my little ballerina who is starting her Junior year at LACHSA (Los Angeles County High School of the Arts) that means DANCE wear. Our first stop was to KARABEL DANCEWEAR on Magnolia blvd. in Burbank. They have a great selection of leotards and tights, of course, but they maintain the best selection of shoes in the city. For a ballerina, that is very important. Lori was an expert at fitting pointe shoes, she was so patient and knowledgeable that we felt certain that we were in the right place.
Of course we needed backpacks and notebooks that we found at TARGET. They had a nice selection of teen fashions, shoes and accessories too, so we were able to get a few new outfits.
But what we wonder the most about is…. WHAT about those heavy books that the school will give out? How many pounds of paper will our little dancer have to haul around on her back? Well, perhaps in the next year or two, she won’t have to worry about books at all, because she’ll have all her content issued on IPADS. That’s right, all those paper books are soon going to be a thing of the past. The LAUSD has purchased IPADS to be first tested out at Roosevelt High School and three other campuses throughout the city. They are currently training the teachers to make sure the roll out works smoothly.
The textbook business is going to have to rethink their business model because they will all soon have their paper and ink books replaced with digital media. We will watch another entire industry change over to a new format. But this time, every parent will cheer to know their little genius won't have to lug around those heavy books anymore. HOORAY!
