It’s just like regular kindergarten … minus the crackers and Kool-Aid smashed into the carpet, the random scissoring of other people’s hair and of course, the paste eating.
Like human kindergarteners, new kittens can seemingly be tireless little balls of energy. Seattle Humane Society’s Kitten Kindergarten class helps to harness some of that liveliness into positive kitten behavior and even a few fun tricks. (That’s right – dogs do not have the animal tricks market cornered!)
During the class, your 8-to 20-week-old kitten will learn how to socialize with other kittens and people of all ages, appropriate litter box manners and how to use a scratching post – in lieu of your white suede couch. Ahem.
Mini Mr. Pickles will also learn about off-limit areas, how to accept handling and nail trimming and even how to sit on cue and come when you call him! You will also get tips on how to keep your kitten happy and occupied indoors and how to introduce a new kitten to the household.
Certified Pet Trainer Jennifer Schneider will teach the class. She has been providing professional instruction to pets and their people since 1997 and owns and operates Cats Can Too!, a business oriented towards cat training and problem solving. The U-Dub grad has a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a focus on animal behavior. Her methods focus on positive, cat friendly techniques and clicker training. She shares her home in Auburn with her husband, two children, two Terriers and four well socialized cats.
The next Kitten Kindergarten takes place September 1st from 6 PM to 7 PM and has a fee of $20. To register call (425) 373-5385 or mail/fax in this registration form. Classes are held on the Seattle Humane Society Campus, 13212 S.E. Eastgate Way, Bellevue, WA 98005.
