In part one of this article, we look at the feature back to school film, Better off Dead. Another, great film that shows the teen angst of high school is Teen Wolf. Although this film is a little more main stream, it is still beloved today. They even have a television series loosely based on the film.
The story is very heartfelt and has great messages. The father says it best when he tells his son, Scott (Michael J. Fox); "the werewolf is a part of you, but that doesn't change what you have inside." In the film Scott is tired of being average. Then he inherits the traits of his father and becomes a werewolf. Thus, his basketball game and grades improve, but the potential was always within him. The wolf did not change who he was, it merely gave him confidence and that allowed him to shine.
This film definitely teaches us to root for the underdog ( no pun intended). Scott also pursues the popular girl in school, Pamela (Lorie Griffin),who basically just uses him to make her boyfriend jealous. Although his childhood girlfriend, Boof ( Susan Ursitti), is in love with him, she does not have all the appeal of Pamela. In the end, he bypasses her and realizes that Boof has been there for him all along. It is a great scene that has been viewed many times by yours truly, but I never noticed this wardrobe malfunction (check out clip here). It is amazing what you can find out online.
However, one of the funniest scenes is the one with the basketball coach (check it out, left). He tells Scott the 3 rules he lives by. Throughout the film he has quirky sense of what is considered helpful advise. The film has a great supporting cast. It also has a memorable soundtrack that is difficult to find, but it actually has its own fan club. If you have not seen this film check it out or watch again.
