Once your child is home from school do they have the proper nutritional tools to boost their brain power? This is particularly important for students who attend extended day programs. Whole grain foods and fruits are a great way to boost energy levels through healthy antioxidants, proteins and fiber. Could you put together a snack time granola packed with a handful of fresh granola cereal, some almonds or soy nuts and dried cranberries, raisins or cherries? Don’t forget that 8 ounce glass of whole milk to wash it down and keep bones and teeth healthy and strong. You could also have healthy sliced fresh fruits and vegetables at the ready. Just clean, dice or slice ahead of time and preserve in 8 ounce sandwich bags. This way after school kids just reach in the fridge, grab a pre-made bag and presto! A healthy snack full of crunch to stimulate the neurons of the brain awaits and if you’ve shopped a local farmers market the community has benefited too!
Make sure your student has a quiet, clutter free place to study with plenty of light. Be sure to check with your individual school to find out if teachers are available to talk to in the evening should you or your student have homework questions. Until next time – good health to you!
