According to the official flyer of the “Native American Voters Alliance” (NAVA). They - “Implement 'get out to vote' campaigns to remind Native American families to vote during each election.” The non-profit organization is located at Albuquerque, N.M. The NAVA board members are, Joseph Garcia (Ohkay Owingeh), Ozawa Bineshi Albert (Yucci') & Amber Carrillo (Laguna).
The NAVA Education Project members are, Phyllis Ann Barudin (Kewa), Joseph Ray ( Laguna), Josh Yasteya (Laguna), Allen Paquin (Jemez) & Mario Atencio (Dine').
The NAVA staff includes, Laurie Weahkee (Director), Tasha Bergen (Grass root fundraiser) & Sonny Weahkee (Organizer).
According to a press release from NAVA. They are - “Hosting the first annual 'Back To School Community Prayer and Blessing' for the Albuquerque and surrounding area Native American students to start the academic year off to a positive and meaningful start. We invite all students, teachers, administrators and families to join us in our efforts to support Native American students from Pre-K to Ph.D.”
“The event will be this Sunday (Aug. 18, 2013) at 'Graves Park' located on the I-40 frontage road between 7th and 8th street from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. After the blessing there will be a community BBQ, games and DJ Wae Fonky. Native American students of all levels of education and their families are invited to this event and are encouraged to bring their school supplies for proper blessing for the school year.”
University of New Mexico student Cheyenne Antonio says, “Native American students are dealing with many responsibilities, which can become a real threat to their education”
Executive Director of NAVA Laurie Weahkee says, “We’re pleased to have such an esteemed group of leaders from other community organizations who will be present to offer encouragement and support for Native students.”
