August 24, 2009 is set to be the first day of school for the El Paso Independent School District. Here is a short checklist of things to consider in the following month leading up to the start of school.
Are your child’s immunizations up-to-date? There has been new information released in the spring of this year regarding updates to Texas immunization requirements. El Paso Department of Public Health can provide you with information on where to get your child immunized locally.
What time does your child go to bed and wake up? Many families tend to have a later bed time for their children when they are not in school. To get your child ready for the regular school hours you should try to ease them back into the schedule by having them go to bed a few minutes earlier and wake a few minutes earlier each day. Start in the last few weeks leading up to school and this should make the transition fairly simple.
Do you know when to register? The EPISD provides a calendar of school and district events at their website which includes registration dates by grade level. List of School Registration Dates for EPISD
Have you purchased your child’s school supplies? Check here for your child’s school website to see if they’ve provided a school supply list. You may also want to consider the Texas Tax Free Days coming up for extra savings when shopping for school supplies and clothing. If you don’t know which school your child should be attending, scroll to the bottom of that link for a zoning list.
Have your planned the meal schedule for your child? Decide what meals will be provided by the school and at what cost. For children who attend school for half days you may only need to worry about one meal (lunch or breakfast) at school your may consider both for those attending a full day class. View Texas School Nutrition Policy. EPISD allows parents to use MyLunchMoney.com to pay for their child’s meals. View the website for more information on how to use MyLunchMoney.com
How will your child get to school each day? If your child needs to take the bus to school, then review the EPISD’s Updated Bus Routes for more information. If driving, both Yahoo! and Mapquest provide travel directions and a map viewable online.
