I'm sorry for not being around on here last week, but don't think that things were idle here, there, or everywhere in the area. Believe you me, good things are on the horizon, are in the works, and will be told your way as soon as they come to fruition.
But in the nice time, I must let you know about one of the must see events around town to kick things off here. YOU REALLY NEED TO GO TO THE FRIST CENTER FOR THE VISUAL ARTS LIKE NOW! You know when the Frist Center does something big, they go all out. Well, last Friday they opened 3 new exhibitions at the same time. I was fortunate enough to check it out the first night and they are all tremendous. First, you can see various real images taken around town in Cameras & Community in Action. Then, you can check out the splendid, cutting edge cartoons of Brian Alfred: It's Already the End of the World. But you will be forever changed and wowed by Carrie Mae Weems: Three Decades of Photography and Video. Weems, a socially motivated artist whose works invite contemplation on issues surrounding race, gender, and class. This is another extraordinary exhibition that has been organized by the Frist Center, curated by the Frist Center, and is primed to shock the world after first pleasantly shocking the locals.
Speaking of shock and glow, the glow from leaves and trees colors are changing over at Cheekwood. It's that time of the year to wander through the gardens and find scarecrows hidden among the trails. With weekly special events beginning this week and going through all of October, Cheekwood is a great place to experience one of the best times of the year festively to the fullest. You can see the chrysanthemums, the scarecrows, the TRAINS! encore across from the Frist Learning Center, and you can carve, paint, or just decorate your very own pumpkin from the new pumpkin patch.
And now that we are talking about what's new, you might be interested to learn about Funky Catsterz; a new retail space that is beyond unique, it's cat-tastic. The Grand Opening for Funky Catsterz and Erabellum is on Thursday, September 27th, from 6-9pm at 1800 8th Avenue South. Funky Catsterz will have a small space that is packed with lithograph and digital prints, framed prints, 3D prints, hand-painted tote bags, t-shirts, and sweatshirts. Everything will be 10% off for the Grand Opening as well.
Then, on Saturday September 29th, you NEED to come out to Main Street Gallery to witness one of the best collaborations around town. From 5-8pm, there will be a tremendous opening reception for Stacey Irvin and Andee Rudloff. If you've never seen either one of their works or collaborative efforts, you are in for quite the treat!
One more thing, before I go back to the idea board, go ahead and mark down this preview into your calendar books … Saturday, October 6th, the 2012 Handmade & Bound Nashville will go down at Watkins College of Art and Design for the now annual arts festival featuring handcrafted zines, artist's books, and all things book arts. It will be a grand ol' time had by all! BOOK it!
