Episode 8 of The Bachelorette brought Jillian Harris and her four remaining suitors to Spain for a round of romantic dates.
With flamenco lessons, spicy Spanish culture and the introduction of the famous "fantasy suite cards" (producer Chris Harrison's invitation to a couple to forgo their separate rooms and relax together in candlelit accommodations), the heat turned up in every way. But viewers watched in anticipation to see if Jillian would come to her senses, realizing the "bad boy" was there for the wrong reasons.
And then, when we all knew it was coming, Jillian (finally) sends Wes Hayden home.
Each date took Jillian and her suitors on a date unlike any other this season. Yes, that's right. Not one, but two meals would be served. And lots of wardrobe changes.
Kiptyn was up first. He and Jillian shared a flamenco lesson (his costume involved supertight black pants), some walks through historic Madrid and a nighttime scooter ride. Jillian worries that Kiptyn, with his 6-pack (12-pack?) abs and perfect everything might be out of her league. Sitting outside that day, Kiptyn said a proposal at this point in their relationship would be a bit premature. Jillian looked disappointed, but sucked it up to the fact that they still had more time (like, a few weeks) to get to know each other better. She says it's also about "taking a leap of faith." The date culminated in dinner and talks of having kids. Jillian says Kiptyn reminds her a lot of her dad, and wishes he wasn't such a pushover. She uses the fantasy suite card to cuddle with Kiptyn later that night, but makes it clear that it's too early in their relationship for any funny business to take place.
Next up, Reid visits Jillian in scenic Sevilla, where the two have a hilarious time trying to speak Spanish in the local markets. Reid says something to a local shopowner, then corrects himself after realizing he's not at Starbucks. ("Soy grande... uh, I'm large?") After goofing around and finally managing to fill up their picnic basket with delicacies, they stop at a park for lunch.
“I think we are in the right place to fall in love,” Reid confesses. Jillian concurs. “I felt like Reid was my boyfriend. We would make a great team.” Jillian tries to get Reid to tell her his feelings, and he says he "likes her a lot," thinks they are very similar and is attracted to her physically.
The two change outfits and then it's off to dinner, where a fantasy suite card awaits. Jillian says she feels like she's falling in love with Reid, but she doesn't want to confuse her feelings for multiple people by spending the night with them too soon. "I think if you and I continue to do what we do, that making the decision to not take Chris' invitation and possibly take it next time, would be the right thing," Jillian says.
Reid says he totally understands and shows a bit of jealousy that there are still all these other guys to compete with. "I wouldn't be jealous if I didn't care," he tells her. She and Reid make out after dinner, but this dude doesn't even get to see the fantasy suite. "Obviously I would love to spend the night and wake up with her in the morning," Reid says in his interview. "It would be amazing. But I think she wants to know how much I like her. I think it was smart on her part. It sucks for me."
The next date, also in Sevilla, Ed and Jillian play catch up. She says she feels like she knows him the least of the other guys. She also has the most hesitation when she's around him, knowing that he left the show for his job and hurt her in the process. They walk hand-in-hand and talk about their relationship. Wait--why are Jillian's khaki shorts soaked? They haven't even hopped in the fountain yet for a quick makeout. Now that her pants are dry again (is this an infomercial product we need to know about--SuperMagicDry?), the two take a horse-drawn carriage around town, cuddling and kissing like it's fantasy suite day.
Jillian wants to know what gave Ed his change of heart. She's not sure she would have had the balls to do the same thing--leaving the show and coming back. "I could'nt get you off my mind," Ed replies. He tells her his priorities changed when he was at home, and he knew he just had to get her back somehow. Over lunch, Jillian asks Ed what a visit to his hometown would have been like. He tells her she would have fit in "just great," and they would have gone to a Cubs game (for some hot dogs--get it?) and hit up a karaoke bar with the fam. Yes, we're all sad to have missed out on that date.
Over their romantic dinner, Ed tells Jillian, ''You are exactly what I'm looking for. I don't know, I can just see us being together for a long time." She's stoked, and almost doesn't notice the arrival of the fantasy suite card. Here it comes--the rejection. "I'm scared of not being rational, and spending the night with you, and then falling for you again and then you freaking out and leaving me again," Jillian said. Ed calms her fears by saying he just wants to spend more time with her, and that he interprets the fantasy suite card in a different way. It works, and Jillian asks Ed to come to the fantasy suite and cuddle with her and catch up for lost time--with their clothes on.
In a final, awkward date, detective Jillian determines that she's going to get to the bottom of Wes's motives. She chose to trust him at the hometown dates, but now he's being distant. Whether it was him insulting her athleticism (''I hope your bike skills are better than your cross-country skiing''), staying as far away as possible during their date or spilling beer on his pants, Jillian says their time together was nothing but "awkward" and she's confused about his lack of affection.
Jillian asks Wes how they could make their relationship work after the show. She asks something like, "So, if we decided it was the best thing for our relationship for you to move to Vancouver for a couple of years, how would that work?" Looking stunned and appalled, Wes says, "That's crazy." His life and his band is in Austin. She asks how they would make it work if she chose him as the final one. His repsonse? ''That bird has no foot." Really, Wes? That's the best you've got?
Not willing to take no for an answer, Jillian continues to get to the bottom of Wes's motives during dinner. He says it was his manager's idea for him to go on the show (wait, I thought it was his little sister who sent in his application), but he also agreed that it would be good for his music career. ''But if I came here to sell records, I've already played you a song, I've already done the whole full band thing. I want you to know that if I wanted to go home, I think that my mission would have been accomplished.''
Jillian doesn't get it. ''How do I even say, 'Wes, you're the one' without knowing you feel the same way?' I do think that you maybe originally came on this show for the wrong reasons, but if you feel differently now, I need to know that.''
His response? ''I'm not here to hurt you,'' says Wes, ''but I’m going to be true to myself, because, you know, numero uno is most important here.'' Wow, Wes. You really know how to make a girl feel special. Determined to kick this Laurel idea to the curb, Jillian brings up Wes's at-home girlfriend again. "I think this person is probably important to you, and I want to know why.''
Wes says it's simple. He told Jake about Laurel. ''I told [Jake] the whole story," Wes begins. "I said my girlfriend...I mean my ex-girlfriend.'' And at the most awkward timing ever, the fantasy suite card arrives. Hungering and thirsting for more TV time, Wes says they should take the fantasy suite. Realizing their relationship is a sham, Jillian says they should skip it and sends Wes home in a cab.
At the rose ceremony, Wes finally goes home. The remaining three suitors--Ed, Reid and Kiptyn--will say 'Aloha' to Jillian in Hawaii next week.
