The Bachelor 2014 premiere aired on ABC Monday night (Jan. 6), and viewers watched as new Bachelor Juan Pablo Galavis met not 25, but 27 lucky ladies. Normally, the show pits 25 women against each other on the battlefield of love, but host Chris Harrison revealed that due to unprecedented levels of interest, ABC decided to increase the number and let two extra women compete.

Bachelor Season 18 Premiere Recap: Juan Pablo Galavis Meets 27 Ladies, Sends Nine Home
A bevy of beautiful women greeted Juan Pablo as he stood out front of The Bachelor mansion, but several stood out for both the right and wrong reasons. Lauren H., 25, was a mess; having been recently jilted by her ex-fiance, this girl was clearly still dealing with the residual effects of her emotional trauma. Everything was "I, I, I," and she couldn't seem to keep the waterworks from flowing.
An awkward through-the-suit massage from massage therapist Amy J., 31, may have sealed her unfortunate fate at the rose ceremony; the bubbly brunette with a bob laid it on way too thick for the first night.
California girl Lucy, 24, came bounding out of the limo with the on-screen label "free spirit" where everyone else's occupation was listed, barefoot and wearing a crown of flowers in her hair. Despite the make-love-not-war, hippie-child vibe, we get the sense Lucy will stir the pot a bit this season.
On the bright side, Assistant District Attorney Andi and opera singer Sharleen seemed to hit all the right notes with Juan Pablo, with Sharleen earning the first rose of The Bachelor 2014 premiere. Ironically, the brunette beauty rather nonplussed by the gesture; in solo on-camera confessionals, Sharleen mentioned she wasn't sure if she was feeling a spark with J.P. "It's too early to tell," she mused, though her face seemed to say it all: not even a little interested.
Some ladies brought gifts; Danielle, a 25-year-old psych nurse, brought a teddy bear for J.P.'s daughter Camila. Christine from Miami, 23, brought a beaded bracelet bearing the little girl's name. Nikki, a pediatric nurse, brought a stethoscope so Juan Pablo could hear how fast he heart was racing, yet she was among the most composed during her actual introduction. (For more on Nikki, check out the Bachelor spoilers for Season 18 linked above.)
The unlucky ladies who did not receive a rose during the first rose ceremony were Amy J., Alexis, Lacy, Ashley, Valerie, Maggie, Lauren H., Christine and Kylie. To add insult to injury for one of these ladies, Kylie stepped forward earlier in the ceremony, all smiles, thinking she heard J.P. call her name; he was actually calling for Kat. Ouch!
