Apart from the famous baked goods, going to Babycakes is a ton of visual fun. The uniforms, the funky signs, the little Babycakes flags hanging across the window, the odd little pieces of ephemera, food-related or not, that are all over the baby pink walls.
Once you've got a cupcake in hand, take one of the few seats, and start looking around. Don't miss the sign that lets you know day old cupcakes are sold as two-for-ones, a pleasant surprise. Check out the options beyond the cupcake: cupcake tops, muffins, cookies, scones, loaves, macaroons, brownies, apple pie, savory items and, of course, cakes.
That's owner Erin McKenna to the left in a photo with Martha Stewart (she's been a guest on Martha's show). To the right of the photo, part of a large calligraphy poster with the bakery's mission statement (no white sugar, no dairy or eggs, some spelt, many gluten free options).
Now for the food: carrot cake, just grand (icing, a bit less so, but still very good). Red velvet (once again, not everyone's a fan of the icing, but the cake--a huge wow). Chocolate chocolate: absolutely positively extraordinary, and even non-chocoholics think so.
You might see movie stars or people from all over the country or planet at Babycakes, but most importantly, you will always see some mighty fine baked goods that everyone can eat. It is a must-visit if you're in New York and want some great gluten-free eats.
