Within the last three years, slings and baby carriers have made way into main
stream shops and registers. The benefits of baby-wearing far exceed just the emotional attachment. The child participates indirectly in the motion of the parent in a sling; this allows for a better developed inner ear. Also, the child is introduced into everyday activities, sounds, smells, sights, and social interactions. Several non-western cultures, such as Maya, Masai, and Samoan still use baby carriers while doing their chores and marketing.
The benefits are not limited to the child. Carrying a child from birth builds back, shoulder, and core muscles. Mothers can walk with the child in the carrier gaining cardio and strength exercise benefits. Breastfeeding is also easier in sling but not all carriers are breastfeeding friendly. Of course, the child will be too large to carry in a sling at some point. Hold off on the stroller and reap the benefits of a deeper relationship between mother and child.
There are several different types of slings and carriers. Many parents suggest trying and owning several different types. Check out http://www.mom4life.com/pages/slingcomparisonchart.php for more information and a comparison of the different styles.
