According to Thursday's publication of the Columbus Dispatch, a three-month-old baby died on Tuesday in Columbus, Ohio, died because of internal injuries caused from bite wounds from the family's dogs.
The baby, Mia Gibson, fell off of the family's couch early Tuesday morning; the baby's father had been sleeping on the couch as well.
According to authorities, the family's two Shiba Inus "played too rough" with the baby and the bite wounds from that "play" proved to be fatal.
Sgt. Steven Little stated:
“It looks like the dogs were probably playing with the baby, thinking she was a toy,”
The statement from the police about the dogs' "play" comes in stark contrast to similar incidents that involve pit bulls. In situations involving pit bulls, the description from officials generally involves the words "mauled, viciously attacked, savaged" and other similar wording.
For the Shiba Inus, however, the fatality is blamed on rough play.
The Gibson family dogs are currently being held by Franklin County animal control; no word on their possible fate.
