Baby kids can read: Lesson two
Materials:Word ‘mommy’ written on a large card. (Dimensions are 6 inches by 24 inches long. The letters should be 5 inches by 4 inches with approximately ½ inch between letters. The letters should be red and printer in lower-case.) Or, download from designated link.
Session One
1. Begin at a time of the day when your child is receptive, rested, and in a good mood.
2. Use a part of the house that has the fewest distractions (auditory and visual).
3. Hold up the word ‘mommy’ just beyond his reach.
4. Say to him, “This says, “Mommy.”
5. DO NOT ELABORATE! Allow him to see the card no more than ten seconds.
6. Now play with him/her. Give him/her your complete attention for a minute or two.
7. Present the word again for the second time.
8. Again allow him to see it for ten seconds.
9. DO NOT ASK HIM WHAT IT IS!
10. Say again, “This says ‘Mommy’.”
11. Again show him/her the word for ten seconds.
12. DO NOT ASK HIM WHAT IT IS!
13. Say again, “This says ‘Mommy’.”When you have completed session one, you will need to wait at least thirty minutes, before repeating an identical session one more time. When you are ready for the third session, the steps change.
New Steps:
1. Hold the word up to your child and say, “What is this?”
2. Mentally count to ten slowly.
3. If your child says, “Mommy,” then make a big fuss. Tell your child you are very proud of him/her. It is wise to hug your child and express your love for him/her physically.
4. If your child does not say, ‘Mommy,’ do not be discouraged. DO NOT SHOW DISAPPOINTMENT!
5. Instead, say to your child, “It is ‘Mommy,’ isn’t it?”
6. Follow the procedures for Lesson Two again the next day. Repeat as needed for four more days, until your child says, “Mommy.”
7. If it has not happened by this time, then stop. Wait a week and start over. When your child has learned ‘mommy’ simply show him/her the word five more times during the same day, asking him/her each time what it is. Remember, to make a big fuss each time he/she answers correctly. When you feel confident your child knows ‘mommy’ then proceed to Lesson Three.
