According to Chicago police, the infant was discovered by a neighbor who found the baby in a car seat is a first-floor apartment in the 3700 block of West 13th Street. When found, the baby’s body was already frozen, according to a Chicago Fire Department official. Officials originally said the baby was 6 or 7 months of age, but NBC is reporting that the infant was 9-months-old. The NBC update also states that there was no food in the apartment, and there appears to be no heat.
Two other children, both girls, were also found in the apartment. The other girls’ ages are 2-years-old and 6-years-old. Both of the girls were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital to be examined. Preliminary reports indicate that the two girls appear to be all right. The infant was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Chicago weather has been unusually cold for this early in the winter season, according to weather reports on WGN radio. Temperatures at O’Hare Airport reportedly dipped just below zero in recent nights. Daytime highs are staying in the teens with wind chills in the single digits.
