A baby was found in a bag after a 17-year-old girl was stopped on suspicion of shoplifting at the Herald Square Victoria's Secret in New York City Thursday afternoon. The NYPD discovered a baby in the bag the girl was carrying instead of clothes or other items from the store.
NBC New York reports Oct. 18 that a security guard asked to look inside the girl's shopping bag at about 1:30 p.m. A strong odor was inside the bag and he noticed a baby's body. The infant didn't show signs of trauma, but it's believed that the baby was born alive on Wednesday after the girl admitted to miscarrying while she was about six months pregnant.
The teen hasn't been charged with any crime by police, but she and the friend she was with when she had the bag, are both charged with petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.
Ricardo Salazar, a Brooklyn neighbor of the girl who had the baby in the bag, said he wasn't aware she was pregnant until he interviewed with authorities on Thursday.
"They asked me if I had seen a lump or if she was recently was pregnant and I told them 'I couldn't really tell,' because she was always a little heavy" Salazar said. "But in a way, I guess she was."
The 17-year-old has another child who is being examined at Bellevue Hospital.
An autopsy will be performed on the dead baby found in the bag.
