A dead baby found in a bag was most likely born alive and then asphyxiated, authorities believe today. The dead baby’s remains were in a shopping bag that a teen was carrying around while shopping in midtown Manhattan. When she was pulled in for possible shoplifting by a Victoria’s Secret security officer, the dead baby was discovered in the bag, according to Fox News local on Oct. 18.
The gruesome discovery was explained to the security guard by the baby's mother, 17-year-old Tiana Rodriguez. The teen said she had given birth to the baby and didn’t know what to do. This lingerie store security guard discovered the baby while looking through her things when she was suspected of shoplifting.
Not much is known about Rodriguez’ pregnancy, her neighbors said they didn’t realize that she was pregnant. Police believe that Rodriguez gave birth at a friend’s house and the infant was later smothered to death. If this is the case, Rodriguez is possibly facing severe charges.
An autopsy was done by the city’s medical examiner, but the findings were inconclusive. More tests are needed to be done on the infant’s remains to find the official cause of death. Rodriguez and her friend, also 17-years-old, were shopping in Manhattan when the security guard found the baby’s remains. Both girls were arrested on petit larceny charges.
Rodriguez told police that she delivered the baby the day before and she didn’t know what to do, so she was carrying it around in a shopping bag. Rodriguez is in a hospital today and while it is not known why she was admitted to the hospital, chances are she’s there undergoing a psych evaluation. After being found carrying a dead baby in a shopping bag while shopping, or shop lifting, it seems as if a psych evaluation would be in order.
Besides not knowing that she was pregnant, a neighbor was shocking saying she was a “good girl” and this is something she didn’t believe she could ever do. This is what Zami Ford told a local newspaper after finding out the accusations against Rodriguez.
