Baby food 101: How to make your own baby food

Making your own baby food is an easy, economical and healthy way to feed your baby.  Here is a simple way to make baby food at home.

Things you'll need:

  • Fresh vegetables or fruit, peeled and quartered.
  • (Sweet potatoes, carrots and squash are great first foods!)
  • Saucepan with a lid
  • Blender or food processor
  • Ice trays
  • Large ziploc bags

If you have a steamer you can steam your fresh veggies or fruit.  However, a saucepan with a lid works just fine.  Simply remove the skins from your veggies, chop them up and throw them in a saucepan with a small amount of water.  Place the lid on top and heat over medium heat.

You can boil your veggies with more water if you have a longer cooking vegetable like sweet potato.  However, too much water can wash away healthy nutrients.  To help the vegetable maintain it's nutrients, try adding a small amount of water, placing the lid on and cooking on medium to medium-high until the vegetable gets tender.

Once tender, place the cooked vegetable in a blender and puree.  Add the water from the saucepan to get the consistency you want.  Spoon baby food into ice trays and freeze until firm. Next, place your baby food cubes into ziploc bags and label for future use.

When it's time for baby to eat simply toss 2-3 cubes in a microwavable bowl, heat for 20-30 seconds (test to make sure it's not too hot) and serve to your little munchkin.
