Baby falls eight stories: Mom dies, suicide note left behind

It's not everyday a baby falls eight stories from a building and lives. According to a March 14 report, a mother attempted suicide by jumping off an apartment building in West Harlem and decided her 10-month-old son was going down with her. Fortunately for the baby, he survived. The boy's mother, Cynthia Wachenheim, died.

Wachenheim, 45, left a seven-page suicide note behind in the apartment she shared with her husband. She wrote in it that she knew what she was about to do was "evil" and that she had concerns about how her son was developing.

Surveillance video shows Wachenheim's husband left the building about an hour before she and the baby fell eight stories from an open window in their apartment.

A witness told law enforcement that when he saw the woman fall, the baby bounced off her body, which may have softened the impact of his fall before he landed on the ground near his mother. The witness said when he got closer, the baby was face down and crying. First responders told the witness' mother to stand back when she attempted to pick him up.

The baby boy, Keston, remains in critical condition after the death-defying fall.
