A baby elephant cries for five hours after being rejected by its mother. On Sept. 13, The Inquisitr reported that Zookeepers at a zoo in China witnessed the mother pachyderm try and kill her offspring not once, but twice. It is unclear why the mother decided to reject her baby but the calf took it hard.
"The calf was very upset and he was crying for five hours before he could be consoled. He couldn’t bear to be parted from his mother and it was his mother who was trying to kill him. They have made a good bond. We don’t know why the mother turned on her calf but we couldn’t take a chance," said a spokesperson from the zoo.
The baby elephant cries story made news around the globe. While in many ways it's cute to read about animals doing things like this (perhaps because it's human-like), it's also very sad. The baby was badly hurt by its mother both emotionally and physically. Zoologists were able to get the baby back to health and he has been learning to adapt to new life at the Shendiaoshan Wild Animal Natural Reserve Area.
Elephants are very sensitive creatures. It's really no wonder that the baby elephant was so upset when his mother rejected him... "elephants have been known to pause when they encounter the bones of dead elephants, feeling the remains carefully with their trunks. Elephants have also been shown to possess a degree of self-awareness rarely seen in the animal world," The Inquisitr reports.
