Baby Elaina: One-year-old toddler Elaina Steinfurth, last seen in June, is back in the news after authorities confirmed yesterday that they removed a box with “apparent human remains” in it from the home of former resident Steven King, the ex-boyfriend of Elaina's mother, Angela Steinfurth, reports NBC 24 Toledo on Sept. 6.
Toledo’s Lucas County Coroner Dr. James Patrick said an autopsy is scheduled this morning, but also stated it could be several weeks before results are made known. Patrick is hoping his office may be able to expedite the process with concurrence from the state. A press conference is scheduled for today.
The home at 704 Federal Street was previously searched, multiple times, by Toledo police and the FBI. The remains were reportedly found inside of an attached garage – literally a few feet away from the site were dozens have gathered to hold prayer vigils since Elaina went missing three months ago.
Father T.J. Steinfurth is reportedly “irate” at the details surrounding the discovery, telling local reporters “It’s hard to be optimistic now.”
Steven King appeared in court Thursday on an obstruction of justice charge in connection to Elaina's disappearance. The search at the home was executed shortly thereafter.
As reported by news site WNWO northwestohio.com:
“Thursday afternoon, WNWO was the first to report that Toledo Police had returned to Federal Street to execute another search warrant in connection to the girl's disappearance. Shortly after, several of the dozens gathered at the scene became engaged in an altercation as tensions flared over what Toledo Police may have found. Additional officers were dispatched to the scene to break up the fight. It is unclear who started the fight and if any family members were injured.”
It appears that King may have provided actionable information at his obstruction hearing, although that has yet to be confirmed by authorities.
King and Elaina's mother, Angela Steinfurth, are now both facing charges of obstruction of justice in Elaina's disappearance, says WNWO.
