On Sept. 6, 2013, the Toledo Police Department held a nationwide, live press conference to update the public regarding the latest news and developments in the Baby Elaina case. Baby Elaina is Elaina Steinfurth, she was born on Dec. 20, 2011, and was reported missing by her biological father, Terry Steinfurth Jr., on June 2, 2013.
After a three-month investigation into Baby Elaina’s disappearance, a gruesome discovery was made on Sept. 5, 2013, at the home where Elaina stayed with her mother and older sister. Toledo Police Chief Derrick Diggs confirmed that a box was found in the garage located at 704 Federal St., in Toledo, Ohio, that contained “immature human remains.” While forensic analysis is required to make a positive identification, most believe the remains are those of Baby Elaina.
Suspicion fell at the feet of Elaina’s mother and her boyfriend Steven King II, immediately following news of Elaina’s disappearance. The case quickly drew national attention and was profiled on shows such as HLN’s Nancy Grace and Jane Velez-Mitchell. Elaina’s father Terry “T.J” Steinfurth Jr., immediately went public with his story and told of his attempts to visit his daughter on June 2, 2013, at the home owned by Steven King’s mother.
According to T.J. Steinfurth, he went to the home located on Federal St., and spoke with Angela Steinfurth. She readily handed over the older child, but said she did not want to disturb Elaina. After much insistence, she finally went into the home to get Baby Elaina, then returned saying that the baby was missing.
Angela Steinfurth was arrested on June 12, 2013; Steven King II, was arrested on July 22, 2013. Both face charges of obstruction of justice. After forensic analysis and an autopsy is performed, it is possible they will face additional charges.
The case was classified as a homicide several months ago. The investigation continues.
