The baby Elaina case has taken a dark turn as human remains were found in a cardboard box in a garage at the house where she was last seen in June before she went missing. The Toledo house was the former residence of baby Elaina’s mother’s boyfriend Steven King, according to an updated report from CBS Local KFVS News on Sept. 6.
Both King and the baby’s mother, Angela Steinfurth were facing charges of obstruction of justice before the discovery of the remains on Thursday. It is not known if the remains are those of baby Elaina until the autopsy is done, which is scheduled for today.
King was in court on Thursday facing the charges of obstructing justice when police went to the garage at the home located at 704 Federal Street and came out with a container of human remains. This is the home were baby Elaina and her mother were staying at the time she went missing. It is not known if King gave police this information about the location of the remains or if it was a lead coming from another source that had police go back and research the premises.
T.J. Steinfurth, Elaina’s father, is furious. He said that the details surrounding his daughter’s disappearance has made him “irate.” The baby’s father said, “lt’s hard to be optimistic now,” after hearing that remains were found. The hope that Elaina may be found alive is waning after this discovery. He described how he was feeling about the investigation into his daughter's disappearance:
"Irate, angry don't even begin to cover it. Don't even begin," said Steinfurth.
Toledo Police are expected to hold a press conference this morning to discuss what the police discovered during Thursday’s search of the former home of King. Police had to break up a fight outside the residence they were searching on Thursday as several bystanders’ who were arguing became involved in a physical altercation. It is not known if any of the people involved in the brawl were relatives of baby Elaina or not. Toledo police dispatched extra patrol cars to the location to break up the fight and help keep the peace.
Update: CNN News reports: a cardboard box containing the "immature remains of a human" was found stuffed in the rafters of a garage in a home where Steven King once lived. The box was not in that location when police first searched the house when baby Elaina first went missing. Police got a tip to search the garage again for that box and that is when the box was found.
